Yearbook Photos of North Carolina Gubernatorial Candidates

As three of the candidates for the Democratic party nomination for Governor ramp up their campaigns, I decided to check the North Carolina College and University Yearbooks collection to see if I could find photos from their college days.

Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton

Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton received his B.S. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971. This photo is from the 1971 Yackety Yack.

Former U.S. Representative Bob Etheridge

Former U.S. Representative Bob Etheridge graduated from Campbell University in 1965. This photo, from the 1965 Pine Burr, is one of many of “Bobby” Etheridge, who was the Senior Class Vice President, a member of the Honor Court, and a star on the Campbell basketball team.

State Representative Bill Faison, 1969

State Representative Bill Faison graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an AB in 1969, overlapping with Dalton by a few years. This photo is from the 1969 Yackety Yack.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any yearbook photo for likely Republican nominee Pat McCrory. McCrory graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury, and the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center has not yet worked with Catawba on yearbook digitization.

Methodist University Yearbooks Now Available

Forty-seven yearbooks from Methodist University are now available online at DigitalNC.org. The yearbooks span from 1964, four years after the institution was formed, to 2010. Methodist University also contributed three yearbooks from the now-defunct Carolina College, which was located in Maxton, N.C. Interestingly, the North Carolina College and University Yearbooks digital collection also contains fifty-four yearbooks and course catalogs from another defunct school that was once located in Maxton, Presbyterian Junior College

CIAA Celebrates Its 100th Year

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), founded in 1912, is celebrating its centennial as basketball teams from twelve member institutions and fans gather today in Charlotte to kick off the annual tournament. This article from today’s News & Observer tells the story of the CIAA basketball conference.

The CIAA consists predominantly of historically Black colleges and universities. You can view materials from member schools past and present — including Elizabeth City State University, Chowan University (the first non-HBCU to participate in the conference), Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, Saint Augustine’s College, Shaw University, and Winston-Salem State University — on DigitalNC.org. Some highlights are below.

Saint Augustine’s at 145

Happy birthday to Saint Augustine’s College (now Saint Augustine’s University) in Raleigh, which is celebrating the 145th anniversary of its founding with full program of Founder’s Week activities.

A large collection of student yearbooks from Saint Augustine’s are available on DigitalNC, and we’ve recently added materials from the vertical files at the Harrison Library in Raleigh, which include many documents related to Saint Augustine’s College, including programs, catalogues, and reports.
