Ladies Steal the Show in the New Yearbooks from Cabarrus County Public Library

The Girls Basketball Team from Kannapolis High School, 1928

Cabarrus County Public Library’s newest contributions to DigitalNC include nearly 90 high school yearbooks. They range from the the mid-1920’s through the early 1960’s, the edge of DigitalNC’s 50 year date embargo for yearbooks. Each gives a unique look at the culture of young people during the period, especially that of young women

From the cropped bobs of the 20’s to the big bouffants of the 60’s, the yearbooks are galleries of teenagers displaying their most fashionable styles for the camera. From the basketball court to the band, high school girls marked the change in style over the decades, even in small towns in North Carolina.

Check out all the fashion and cultural changes throughout high schools in North Carolina by browsing the North Carolina Yearbooks Collection.

UNC Medical School Yearbooks Now Available

The University of North Carolina School of Medicine yearbooks are now available on DigitalNC. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine was established in 1879, but these are the only six yearbooks that have been produced. Called “The Tarhealer,” the yearbook was published from 1987-1992. More so than the traditional yearbook, these focus on snapshots captured in everyday life over posed portraits. Medical students are seen in daily life, taking classes, studying, in lab, relaxing — and performing sketches. On this page, UNC School of Medicine alumnus, Ken Jeong, is performing alongside fellow students. He is now known for his roles in Community, The Hangover, and Dr. Ken, a show based on his experiences as a doctor.

These yearbooks provide an intriguing look into the lives of students. They showcase the fashions, clubs and activities of North Carolina students, some that will be familiar to students today and some that have been abandoned over time (Did your class have child mascots? How about a superlative for Best Looking?).
