10 new yearbooks are now available on DigitalNC, courtesy of the Heritage Research Center at High Point Public Library. These yearbooks document the history and students of High Point Hospital School of Nursing.

Dating as early as 1940, these yearbooks offer a look into the changing profession of nursing. The school was originally housed at the Burrus Memorial Hospital and operated until 1978. It trained nearly 900 nurses during its 70 years of operation. The yearbooks offer a look into a female dominated field and the culture of student life over several decades.

We have uploaded four new yearbooks from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The yearbooks, called “Grey Matter,” are from 2012 to 2015. They feature medical students and PA students as well as faculty. The yearbooks include student photos, white coat ceremonies, match day, clubs, student groups, intramural sports, and various events.

These four yearbooks join 73 others from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the earliest from 1943. The Wake Forest School of Medicine was founded in 1902 with the goals of “teaching excellence in clinical medicine, promoting strong clinical and basic research, rendering exemplary patient care and stressing service to the community.” You can learn more about the school on their website and see more content from them and older blog posts on their contributors page.

Witches Club, Presbyterian College for Women, 1910.

In celebration of the beginning of Spring, we decided to recreate a favorite yearbook photo at DigitalNC. The photograph is of a students’ Witches Club, and it comes from the 1910 yearbook “The Edelweiss,” from the Presbyterian College for Women, a precursor to Queens University of Charlotte. You can read more about it in a past blog post.

Inspired by other libraries, we created our own peep diorama, complete with cauldron, broomsticks, hats, and a cat to celebrate one of the many great North Carolina school clubs on DigitalNC.

New Transylvania County Public Library Yearbooks

From the Brevardier [1965], page 97

7 new yearbooks from the Transylvania County Public Library are now available on DigitalNC. The yearbooks document the lives of students and teachers from Brevard High School, Rosman High School, and Brevard College.

The yearbooks from Brevard High School may be of particular interest because of their many humorous photos and captions. While all of the yearbooks on DigitalNC document the distinct character of a given school, some are a bit more dramatic than others. The editors of this batch of yearbooks from Brevard definitely had a sense of humor!

DigitalNC is happy to offer two new yearbooks from the Wayne County Public Library. The yearbooks are from Eureka High School, located in Eureka, NC, which had a population of about 200 people at the 2010 census. These yearbooks offer a nice look into the life of a small community school during the 1950’s. Although it is described as a high school, both yearbooks feature 1st-12th grade classes. Yearbooks like these could be excellent resources for genealogy research, especially about this small community.
