Thanks to our partner, Central Carolina Community College (CCCC), over 100 new photographs from the 1960s to 1980s are now available on our website.

These photographs heavily feature Paula Larke, a storyteller who was an artist in residence at the college in 1982. The Paula Larke photos show her at an event with elementary school children and seniors, performing on stage, and on a train in downtown Sanford, North Carolina. Other artists in residence in this batch include classical guitarist Gail George and Folk musician Clark Jones. The Central Carolina Community College, in addition to their Artist in Residence program, had the Visiting Artist program. Both of these programs were a collaboration between the North Carolina Arts Council and the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges.  Two visiting artists, saxophonist Gregg Gelb and playwright Ed Devaney, are featured in this batch.

Other photographs in this batch include portraits of Board of Directors members such as Meigs Golden, Hal T. Siler, Douglas H. Wilkinson; the swearing in of the Board of Trustees and Board of Directors, and images of the Board of Trustees.

A new batch of photos from Central Carolina Community College is now available on DigitalNC. This is our tenth batch of photos from CCCC, and it brings our exhibit A Pictorial History of Central Carolina Community College to over 3,600 photos.

This batch covers a wide variety of subjects. There are photos from the mid-1960s, when CCCC was first called Lee County Industrial Education Center, later to be renamed Central Carolina Technical Institute.  Many of these show the construction of the building. There are photos of the the Hockaday Hall building, housing the Student Center and Administrative offices on the Lee County campus of, at the time, CCTI.

There are also photos of the CCTI Library on the Lee County campus, as well as photos of diligent students and library staffers. The amount of photos containing students from different fields studying in the library shows how important it is to CCCC students’ success. Some librarians and figureheads in the library are highlighted. Finally, there are also photos of construction of buildings on campus which would later become Wilkinson Hall. These photos date from 1960 to 2009.

Nearly 75 new photographs have been digitized and added to DigitalNC, courtesy of our partner, Central Carolina Community College.

This new batch comes in five collections. The first contains photos of students and staff lining up and working at the bookstore on campus in the 1960s and 1970s, back when it was still called Central Carolina Technical Institute. The second collection contains around two dozen photos from 1984 of Budd Memorial Court and Budd Hall on the Lee County campus of CCCC. The third collection focuses on the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center at the Lee County campus, with nearly two dozen photos of students or shots of the building from the 1990s. The fourth contains photos of the Classroom and Fitness Center on the Lee County campus, featuring students and campus views. Finally, the fifth features images of the Guided Studies Building on the Lee County Campus.

A new batch of photographs from Central Carolina Community College is now available on DigitalNC. These photographs range in date from the 1960s through the 1990s and focus mainly on campus facilities. CCCC was started as Lee County Industrial Education Center in the early 1960s, but underwent name changes in 1965, 1979, and 1988 to become Central Carolina Technical Institute, then Central Carolina Technical College, and finally Central Carolina Community College. These photographs follow the school through periods of growth and change and document how campus looked through all of these stages. Particularly striking is a collection of aerial photographs that shows CCCC’s Lee County Campus from above.

A new batch of over 130 images from Central Carolina Community College have now been added to DigitalNC. This is our seventh set of photos and it brings our exhibit A Pictorial History of Central Carolina Community College to almost 3,000 photos!

Much of this set is about the various buildings around CCCC, including the construction of the CCCC Pittsboro campus, the construction of the CCCC Etheridge High Tech building, and the planning and construction of the CCCC Harnett County campus. Also included are photos of the NC School of Telecommunications, the Harnett Correctional Institute,  and several aerial photographs taken of the CCCC Campus in Harnett County.

A new set of photos from Central Carolina Community College is now available on DigitalNC. This is our sixth batch of photos and it brings the exhibit A Pictorial History of Central Carolina Community College, to nearly 2,800 photos!

This batch covers the veterinary medical technology program and the welding program from Central Carolina Technical Institute.

Featuring photos from the 1960’s to well into the 1990’s, the collection for the veterinary medical program contains exciting photos of students holding and working with many different types of animals, including cats, dogs, snakes, cows, horses, and goats. Many of the students worked directly with the animals themselves, although several of the photos also show exhibit presentations and technology of the time.

The welding program collection also has photos over the course of thirty years and shows off many of the technology and welding tools of the time, as well as how students also used hands-on learning in their classes.

Another batch of photos from Central Carolina Community College is now available on DigitalNC. This new batch brings the exhibit, A Pictorial History of Central Carolina Community College, to just over 2,400 photos.

First graduates of the CCCC’s Nursing degree program

This batch documents the Nursing, Paralegal, Secretarial Science, Telephony, Associate in Arts and University Transfer Associate in Science programs.

Featuring photos from as early as their first graduating class in Lee County on March 25, 1964 and on into the 1990’s, the images from the Practical Licensed Nursing degree program demonstrates the evolving student body, curriculum, technology and, of course, nursing uniforms.

Likewise, the Secretarial Science program gives viewers a glimpse into how this profession evolved as technology did. In particular, these collection of images capture the exciting transition from typewriters to early desktops.

In contrast to these programs, the Central Carolina Technical Institute Telephony and Electrical Linemen program’s set of photos display the waning profession of telephone linemen and women. These set of photos present the hands-on training students received as they worked with lines, wires, circuits and telephone poles.

Hands-on training is further demonstrated in many other class photos. One of interesting example, comes from a Psychology class that appears to be engaging in some kind of simulation activity that included persons in costume and law enforcement officers. While it is unclear exactly what the activity entails, it is clear that the students were having fun participating.

A fourth batch of photos from Central Carolina Community College are now available on DigitalNC. The overarching exhibit, A Pictorial History of Central Carolina Community College, now holds nearly 2,000 photos.

This batch documents the Machine Tool & Die program, the Motorcycle Mechanics program, the English-as-Second-Language program, the Industrial Maintenance program, Fire Fighter training program, Laser Optics program, and the Extension Courses.

Of particular interest in this set of photos are the amount of women who trained and studied in many heavy industry programs, like Machine Tool & Die and Motorcycle Mechanic courses. The photos above are just two of many women who broke into traditionally male-dominated fields.

In addition, the extension course photos document Central Carolina Community College’s important role in the city of Sanford and the surrounding areas. Students, both young and old, participated in a variety of classes– from pottery and other crafts to cooking and calligraphy. These photos demonstrate the far reaching benefits of community colleges with continuing education. They also often a window into hobbies and trends during the 1970’s and 1980’s. It’s hard to find classes in macrame and doll making today!

Central Carolina Community College, Electronics Engineering Technology Students

Batch 3 of Central Carolina Community College’s photos are now available on DigitalNC. These images document the Drafting and Design, Electronics Engineering, Child Care, Drivers Education, and Continuing Education programs.

The exhibit, A Pictorial History of Central Carolina Community College, now has nearly 1400 hundred photos. Ranging from the early 1960’s to the late 1990’s, the photos document the academic lives and activities of students at the college. Many of the photos include descriptive metadata with the names of individuals that are depicted. This batch is teeming with unique images of this active and diverse community.
